G9: Political Science: Scrapbook Instructions

Guide with resources for G9 Political Science.

Essential Question & Objectives

Essential Question: How do the Constitutional Amendments affect your life today?

Objectives:

  • Develop and strengthen research skills
  • Demonstrate understanding of the facts and arguments in a news story by paraphrasing news articles
  • Make connections between the facts and arguments in a news story and a Constitutional Amendment/Provision

Written Analysis

Over the course of the semester, students will analyze eight (8) news articles about constitutional issues dealing with the Bill of Rights and the 14th Amendment. Students may either focus on separate amendments for each scrapbook entry, or may focus on a singular amendment as long as each provision is different.

Each scrapbook entry should contain the following:

  1. A cover page, which includes:
    • The amendment number and title
    • A paraphrase of the amendment or provision
    • A wordless image (found or student-created) illustrating the case's issues and decision, which includes:
      • The source for the image
      • A title, under the image, in parentheses
  2. The selected news article in its entirety
  3. The write-up, three (3) paragraphs long, which includes:
    • Paragraph 1: A summary of the news story/article
    • Paragraph 2: Arguments from both sides presented in the student's own words
    • Paragraph 3 (use the following format): The article reflects the (____) Amendment because (____). The article discusses a dispute between (____) and (____). The main question is (____). This pertains to whether (the event, governmental action, law) violates (the constitutional provision of the ____ Amendment).

Final Product

When compiling the final version of the scrapbook project, students should:

  • Arrange entries in order of amendment (ie. 1st Amendment, 2nd Amendment, etc.)
  • Arrange each entry in order by contents (ie. cover page, article, write-up)
  • Include a Works Cited section at the end of the scrapbook in MLA format. The Works Cited section should include 16 sources - eight (8) news articles and eight (8) images.
